Lady Gaga’s gothic makeup selfie with bold black eyeliner stirs nostalgia for 90s and 2000s beauty trends.

Lady Gaga boasts various looks, ranging from her fresh-faced, makeup-free persona to her Joker-inspired and glamorous red-carpet styles. However, my personal favorite is her gothic appearance. Today, we’re captivated by this particular aesthetic, thanks to her recent selfie.

The selfie, shared on her makeup brand’s Instagram page, Haus Labs, features Gaga in full-face glam makeup, expertly applied by her makeup artist, Sarah Tanno. As expected, Gaga’s complexion is flawless, and her eyebrows are impeccably groomed. Yet, what truly steals the spotlight is the bold black under-eye liner. It’s not only exuding punk rock vibes but also reminiscent of the late 1990s and early 2000s makeup trends.

The caption reveals the secret to achieving this captivating eye look: “New founder selfie just dropped! 💥 @ladygaga wears Optic Intensity Eco Eyeliner in ‘Black Onyx Matte’.” We’re definitely adding a dozen to our online shopping cart!

Setting aside shopping sprees, this eye makeup is part of what we like to call the ‘butterfly’ makeup trend, and it’s remarkably simple to recreate at home. The name is inspired by the butterfly motif that defined 90s and Y2K fashion and beauty. The key to this look is its fanned-out, winged water-lined shape.

Just as Gaga and Sarah did, take your preferred creamy eyeliner pencil (preferably the one from Haus Labs mentioned above) and apply it under your lower lash line, extending it into a classic winged flick. For a more gothic, grunge-inspired twist, blend out the product with a fluffy makeup brush.

Et voilà!

Pair this look with a trucker hat, hoop earrings, block-heeled Mary Janes, and a Tamagotchi, and you’ll be ready to transport yourself back to the Millennium Dome era.
